BAD WEATHER HAMPERS NORWEGIAN PELAGIC FLEET

Bad weather hampers Norwegian pelagic fleet. Several Norwegian boats ventured for herring in northern area and bad weather hampered the activities of the mackerel fleet last week, according to an article on Norges Sildesalgslag.

NVG herring

For NVG (spring spawning) herring, almost 20 vessels, including one foreign vessel, made the trip north for herring and last Friday was a great day with over 7,200 tonnes registered, the majority from the area north of Tromsø. The total for the week was 12,860 tonnes. The herring is in the order of 290 to 315 grammes. The herring has been delivered from Tromsø in the north to Ålesund in the south.

Mackerel

The week started well with almost 9,000 entries on Monday, mainly from the UK zone. Then it trailed off during the week when the weather was bad. Some vessels have returned to the Norwegian zone and are now 45 nm northwest of Ålesund. From that area there was around 5,500 tonnes last week. A mackerel catch of around 50 tonnes had also been taken in the Vestfjorden.

There are still a number of vessels in the UK zone east of Shetland. Around 193,000 of the total quota of 246,433 tonnes have now been fished (including carryover from last year). Of the remaining quota of 54,000 tonnes, around 14,300 can be caught in the UK zone. Good weather is forecast for the coming week

North Sea herring

Five vessels have also been fishing for North Sea herring in week 41. A total of 560 tonnes were reported, the majority from the North Sea 80 nm west of Stavanger,
