A mission to educate and inspire

The Eat Scottish Mussels campaign is reigniting national interest in one of Scotland’s most sustainable and nutritious food sources. Developed by Kelly Wright, the Scottish Farmed Shellfish Brand Ambassador, the campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage greater consumption of Scottish farmed mussels, particularly among younger consumers and food conscious audiences.

The campaign is part of a wider initiative supported by the Association of Scottish Shellfish Growers, Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group, Associated Seafoods and Crown Estate Scotland. It seeks to showcase the benefits of mussels and other Scottish farmed shellfish through education, storytelling and evidence based messaging. As the organisers put it, the campaign is “on a mission to tell the nation and a whole new generation of foodies, just how great these little miracles are!”

Scottish mussels have superpowers

Backed by newly commissioned research, the campaign highlights the remarkable sustainability and nutritional value of Scottish mussels. Grown in the pristine waters around the West Coast and Islands of Scotland, mussels offer a clean, low-impact source of protein. They require no feed, growing naturally by filtering microscopic plant life from the sea. Their cultivation even contributes to healthier marine ecosystems.

As the campaign notes, Not only do they provide a sustainable source of protein but they are also packed full of nutrients that many people are commonly deficient in, like vitamin B12 and Iron.”

Future food security

With one of the lowest carbon footprints of any farmed protein, mussels represent a model of sustainable aquaculture. As global populations increase and pressure on food systems grows, low-impact farming methods like shellfish cultivation will play a key role in future food security. As the campaign stresses, “low impact, sustainable farming such as for mussels and other shellfish will help to feed and provide an important source of nutrition for future generations.”

Easy, delicious, affordable

A recent consumer survey commissioned by Scottish Shellfish revealed that people choose mussels for their convenience, taste, and value. Many respondents
said mussels are, “quick to cook, easy to cook, taste great and are fantastic value for money!”

However, despite Scotland’s rich seafood heritage, many consumers remain hesitant to prepare shellfish at home. The campaign addresses this gap by demystifying the cooking process and
encouraging greater confidence in the kitchen.

Kelly Wright, Ambassador for Scottish Farmed Shellfish, explains:

“We have a wonderful food source growing right here but many people are just not aware how accessible it is. In a time when household budgets are stretched a plate of mussels provide a
very low-cost tasty meal option.”

Tasty, affordable, healthy, and sustainable. What’s not to like?

With bold messaging, expert backing and a clear focus on accessibility, Eat Scottish Mussels is well-positioned to change perceptions and bring Scottish farmed mussels to more tables across
the country.
