On the visit, the minister went on a tour of Newlyn fish market, visited Cornwall Fish Direct, visited W. Harvey & Sons shellfish merchants, and met with the CEO and members of the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation.
Fisheries Minister Daniel Zeichner said:
“I have learned a great deal and hugely enjoyed visiting Newlyn and seeing its diverse fleet, looking at the variety of fish at the market, and having thought-provoking conversations at the quayside.
“Hearing the passion and expertise of those I spoke with has reinforced just how vital the catching sector is in providing food and supporting the restaurants, processors, merchants, and engineers around the harbour.
“Many opportunities lie ahead for our fishing sector, from the opening of new fisheries to more considered industry engagement, and this government is committed to making the most of them to ensure the sector can best contribute to our country’s food security and economic growth.”
Fishing has always been an integral part of Cornish heritage, but perhaps it was the humble pilchard that cemented fishing at the heart of the Cornish way of life back in the early 1700s. Fishermen in open rowing boats were regularly directed by “huers”: clifftop look-outs used to locate shoals of fish and direct the fishing operation from a high vantage point.
These days the huers might be gone but the reputation of Cornish fishermen and the world-renowned fish they catch lives on. The Cornish fleet continues to supply the UK and beyond with a fantastically diverse range of sustainable fish and shellfish species for dinner plates everywhere.
