GLOBAL INNOVATORS

Global innovators unite to tackle sustainable seaweed solutions. Stakeholders, enthusiasts and newcomers from around the world are coming together for a 24-hour telethon to discuss the regenerative potential of seaweed.

From bioplastics to cosmetics, seaweed can unlock various social, environmental and economic benefits.

Speaking ahead of the event, Antoine Erwes, co-founder of Seaweed First, said:
“We stand at a pivotal moment for the seaweed industry today. On one hand, there is an urge to address global challenges such as climate change, food security, health and poverty. Many companies and countries have set ambitious goals but generally lack the tools to make them a reality. On the other hand, innovation and research have positioned seaweed as a strategic resource to address these problems. Despite being an ancient industry, seaweed’s numerous economic, social and environmental benefits have just begun making it a trending topic.
“However, too much attention can be dangerous, and it is important to separate truth from hype. Many facts are being exaggerated in order to fit agendas. In the long term, this will bring more harm than good to seaweed as scandals will rise and projects will fail to deliver promised expectations.
“With Seaweed Around the Clock, we want to prepare the next businesses, investors and consumers of seaweed to the reality of the market. By demystifying seaweed, we hope to lead the industry in the right direction and create a seaweed sector where farmers prosper, our oceans are protected and businesses can build regenerative supply chains around this resource. In the background, our non-profit Seaweed First will continue to work on providing better seaweed data and help improve the economic and environmental performance of farms while accompanying businesses in the creation of their seaweed strategy.”
