Lantra and industry partners launch new aquaculture resources to strengthen classroom learning

Lantra Scotland has released two new student workbooks to support the National Progression Award (NPA) Level 4 in Aquaculture, the only direct pathway from school into the sector and a crucial link between marine farms and the communities around them.

Developed over nine months in collaboration with Bakkafrost Scotland, Mowi Scotland, Scottish Sea Farms and UHI Argyll, the workbooks address the need for professional, engaging materials that support consistent delivery across schools. Each resource includes topic introductions, activity-based learning, and space for pupils to document their work experience insights, helping connect theory to practice.

Head of Aquaculture at Lantra, Dr Jillian Couto-Phoenix, said:

“This project shows what can be achieved when education and industry come together with a shared purpose.

“By collaborating closely, we’ve been able to create resources that give young people a clearer, more engaging insight into aquaculture, helping them build confidence and develop the skills that are valued across the sector.

“Our hope is that this strengthens local talent pipelines and supports long-term workforce development in communities where aquaculture plays such an important role.”

Scottish Sea Farms’ Talent Development Business Partner Irene Pozom, added:

“For us, this collaboration was about more than creating teaching materials — it was about investing in the future of the communities we operate in. By working alongside Lantra Scotland and other producers, we’ve helped build a consistent, accessible pathway for young people who are curious about aquaculture but may not have had the chance to explore it.

“These new resources will help pupils better understand the opportunities on their doorstep and support the development of a strong local workforce for years to come. We’re proud to play a part in nurturing the next generation of talent for Scotland’s sustainable aquaculture sector.”

Commenting on the new teaching resources, Donald Waring, Learning and Development Manager at Mowi Scotland, said:

“Sharing our delivery experience from the Outer Hebrides helped ensure the workbooks are practical and adaptable to different teaching environments.

“The result is a resource that adds real value for pupils and supports the long-term development of local talent.”

Jennifer Allison, Senior Human Resources Business Partner at Bakkafrost Scotland, commented:

“Our role in the collaboration was to ensure the content was accurate and reflective of modern salmon farming.

“These workbooks will help pupils build a clearer understanding of the sector and give instructors a strong foundation to work from. It’s a resource that will benefit communities and classrooms alike.”

The workbooks are now available for use across the UK and can support delivery in any school seeking to introduce pupils to Aquaculture.
