A STEP TOWARDS NET ZERO FOR SKYE SALMON FARMER

A step towards Net Zero for Skye salmon farmer. As world leaders gather at COP26 to debate how to tackle climate change, Scotland’s newest organic salmon farming start-up is launching a packaging solution with reduced greenhouse gas emissions that will help save the planet.

The fully-compostable packaging will contain less than half the amount of CO2 in normal packaging, reduce the need for energy at the packing stage and eliminate the issue of microplastics, while still ensuring food safety and storage time. The Organic Sea Harvest organic salmon portions in the new packaging will be available early 2022.

Called CF422, the packaging will be sourced from CELNOR Eco Packaging Ltd, a company offering plastic-free, compostable biomaterial packaging. The material is purpose-grown and sourced in the EU.

Organic Sea Harvest have been searching for packaging in keeping with their organic ethos. The CF422 will reduce the use of plastics and, therefore, eliminate the danger of microplastics in the environment, unlike current, widely-used industry packaging. Once the salmon has been removed and enjoyed, the packaging can be composted. As it is partly composed of calcium carbonate, the same material found in eggshells, it will go back to the ground it came from and leave nothing behind except compost. As Organic Sea Harvest works toward their goal of becoming the world’s leading organic salmon farmer, they will move forward with environmentally-friendly packaging that helps contribute to global Net Zero.
