ECUADOR’S SHRIMP SECTOR EXPLORES HOW TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE

Ecuador’s shrimp sector explores how to improve performance through new technologies at SustainED. Shrimp aquaculture is entering a new phase, where the use of data and digital tools is beginning to transform how operations are managed across the value chain.

On April 14, more than 60 professionals from Ecuador’s shrimp sector participated in a new edition of SustainED, a lifelong learning programme led by the Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) and the National Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA), to explore how the industry is incorporating digital solutions and new technologies, and how these can be applied in practice to strengthen its ongoing process of improvement and innovation.

During the event, five national and international experts from organisations such as Intelligon, EDISA, LarvIA, Biolan, and Solarteam presented tools and case studies on data integration, artificial intelligence, traceability, food safety, and renewable energy across different stages of the sector’s value chain. The event, titled “Digital Solutions in Aquaculture: Control, Efficiency, and Better Decision-Making in Shrimp Production,” was held at the Hilton Colón Hotel in Guayaquil.

“SustainED is driving this conversation because the industry’s sustainability also depends on its ability to maintain consistent results over time. This requires stronger operational management and the ability to anticipate risks, and digital solutions make this possible by providing greater visibility and enabling timely action,” explained the Director of SSP, Pamela Nath.

Likewise, the Executive President of the CNA, José Antonio Camposano, stated:

“Ecuador, the world’s leading producer and exporter of shrimp, has demonstrated throughout its history a strong capacity to innovate and adapt to the sector’s challenges. Today, rather than focusing on increasing volume, the priority is on continuously improving the performance of our operations. With the support of new technologies, the industry has the opportunity to better understand its operations, make more informed decisions, and continue building trust through its results.”

SustainED served as a platform for continuous knowledge sharing and networking, facilitating the exchange of experiences and promoting the adoption of innovative solutions across the entire value chain.
