SOUTH KOREA AIMS TO CREATE INNOVATIVE FISHING FLEET
South Korea aims to create innovative fishing fleet. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea intends to invest $ 25.5 million by 2025 in the development of energy-efficient eco-friendly fishing vessels.
It is supposed to use a hybrid engine. According to him, interested organisations have already been found for the design of the new fleet, and appropriate agreements have been concluded with them.
It is planned to create integrated fishing vessels, seiners and longline vessels. Developers will focus on electric motors and batteries and reduce their size. Other necessary equipment will also be designed, and attention will be paid to assessing the safety of new units.
Prototypes will be tested in the field. The initiators expect the innovative fleet to help cut operating costs by 30% and greenhouse gas emissions by 25%.
Within the framework of the project, it is planned to use the capacities of small and medium-sized shipyards.
South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries aim to:
- Promote spread of eco-friendly ships to respond to changes in the eco-friendly
paradigm in the shipbuilding and shipping markets due to strengthening of environmental
regulations in the international shipping sector
- Future-oriented ships(hydrogen, electricity) are needed to pre emptively respond to IMO’s
greenhouse gas emission regulations (targeting 50% reduction from 2008 by 2050) → Eco-friendly ship
technology determines the future competitiveness of shipbuilding and shipping industries
